උ, n. The seventh vowel of the alphabet. Its sound is that of oo in Foot. Its non-initial forms /?/ and ු called පාපිල්ල—lower or foot piece—are placed below the consonant they vocalize, as කු, මු, koo, moo.

උකස, උකහ, n. pledge, pawn, security, mortgage.

උකස් කැරය, n. mortgage deed.

උකස් තබනවා, or තිබනවා or තියනවා, v. t. to pawn, deposit as a pledge, hypothecate, mortgage.

උකස් වෙළෙන්දා, n. pawnbroker.

උකස් හිමියා, n. the holder of the pawn, mortgagee.
