අ, n. The first letter of the Alphabet. It varies bightly in pronunciation, depending sometimes on the meaning or derivation and sometimes on the consonants with which it is combined. It is (1) the clear, distinct sound obtained by shortening ආ ah; (2) the sound of a in negative or miracle. In initial syllables the sound is generally the first of these; the second arises from the dropping of the voice in the unaccented syllables. It is written only when it is the initial letter of a word, but is pronounced after every consonant to which no other vowel is attached, or where it is not suppressed by the sign ්, as කරනවා, karanavā, the final vowel අ, which is long, alone being written;කරන් karan, the vowel අ after න being suppressed by the sign ්.

අ විචිත්‍ර, a. undiversified, unvariegated, විසිතුරු නැති, plain, bald, චාම්.

අ විවිධාකාර, a. (ආකාර), unvarying,නොයෙක්x ආකාර නොවන, unvaried, uniform, equable, එකාකාර.

අ විවිධාකාරත්වය, n. unvarying state, uniformity, equability, එකාකාරකම.

අණ්ඩ කෝෂ නාඩි ශෝඵය, n. varicocele, පේළා කෝෂනාඩිඉදිමුම.

අති තණ්හාව, n. ardent longing, තද ආශාව; great avarice, මහත් තණ්හාව.

අනඟ රිපු, අනඟ රුපු, n. ap. of Isvara or Siva as the enemy of Cupid.

අනේ, අනේක, a. (අන් එක), not one only, several, manifold, various, නොයෙක්.

අනේක ප්‍රකාර, අනේකාකාර, a. various, manifold, multiform, multifarious, mixed, නො යෙක් ආකාර, මිශ්‍ර.

අභි ධ්‍යානය, අභි ධ්‍යාව, n. (අභි emp., ධ්‍යාන &c., fixing the mind on), covetousness, avarice, තණ්හාව; meditation, භාවනාව.

අරළු, yellow myrobalan, Terminalia Chebula, of which seven varieties are distinguished (Combret.).

අර්‍ථ වෛකල්පය, n. doubtful or alternative sense, අර්‍ථයේ අනුමානකම; prevarication. E.S.

අෂ්ට විද්‍යා, n. pl. the eight kinds of knowledge possessed by Rahats, viz. 1 knowledge attained by religious meditation, 2 knowledge of how to perform supernatural things, 3 knowledge of the various supernatural powers, 4 divine or supernatural hearing, 5 knowledge of others' hearts, 6 knowledge of previous existences, 7 divine sight, 8 knowledge of how to subdue the passions.

ආබහි, a. avaricious, parsimonious, stingy, ලෝභ, මසුරු.

ආබහිකම, n. avariciousness &c., avarice, parsimony, ලෝභකම, මසුරුකම.
